According to a popular newspaper the most popular things to give up for Lent last year were chocolate, social networking, alcohol, Twitter, Facebook, school, meat, sweet, coffee and fizzy drinks. The abstinence from these things aims to remind us of the experiences of Jesus during his time of fasting for 40 days in the desert before he began his ministry and to help focus and reflect on the eventual sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross. But, this period in Jesus life has far more to teach us about living a spirit filled Christian life that it does about giving things up.
Jesus’ actions, behaviours and words during his time in the wilderness show us that when we trust and rely on Gods truth, his righteousness, peace, faith and salvation we can overcome the challenges and trials of daily life. But, we have to resolve to both purposeful and deliberately take up God’s words in the bible and apply them to our lives.
In our Sermon Series will be look at not just giving up things for Lent but taking up God’s word so we can stand strong and live the Christian lives God has called us to live.
