In Autumn 2012 St Mary’s had the idea to form a new choir to sing at our Christmas carol service. After securing the services of a choir master, Alex Norman, we were overwhelmed at the response as 56 people from the community turned up to the first practice. Our own ‘Carols from Kings’, the resulting service was a great success and the choir vowed to carry on.
Wythall Community Choir has kept ties with St Mary’s, but is not a church choir and has a very wide repertoire, including show music, popular classical, gospel and modern music, as well as Christmas Carols. They practice regularly with around 50 members in a wide range of age groups 16+, and hold performances and concerts during the year including the Wythall Carnival. The choir is a registered member of ‘Making Music’, a national umbrella association for amateur and voluntary music groups.
Alex Norman has accepted the position of Musical Director permanently and is well qualified for his role, holing a Master’s Degree in Conducting from Birmingham Conservatoire prior to which he was an organ scholar at Royal Holloway, University of London. He is also Director of Music at All Saints Church in Coventry.
Other positions in the management of the choir are Jo Chandler (chair), Alan Clarke and Kerie Harris (joint treasurers) and Robert Lawley (secretary). The one thing they have in common is their love of music and singing in particular. The aim of the choir is:
“The bringing together of people of all ages and backgrounds to promote, advance, improve, develop and maintain public interest in, and appreciation of, music in all its aspects by any means.”
All are welcome to join Wythall Community Choir, and Alex does not ask for auditions unless people wish to take a solo part. Many new friendships are being formed and the choir produces an in-house newsletter. On joining an annual membership fee of £15 is required, then a weekly charge of £2 which is collected at each rehearsal.
