On 14th to 16th October 2016 we had our Big Church Weekend In, with teaching, worship, a youth sleep out raising money for St Basil’s, fun, entertainment, fellowship and food! On this page are some of the talks, in case you missed them or would like to listen again. For some photos of the weekend see our news pages here.
Setting the Scene
On Friday evening Rich set the scene, starting to explore the Vision of St Mary’s
Hospitality, Ritual and Joy
On Saturday we welcomed Steve Squires and Ruth Hassall who talked about the values of Hospitality, Ritual and Joy in our church life, using stories from the New Testament. Here is Ruth’s Introduction
Ruth talked about hospitality; Steve Squires then used the stories of the Feeding of the Five Thousand (John 6: 1-15) and The Woman at the Well (John 4:1-42) to get us thinking more about how it might relate to life at St Mary’s. Before listening to the talk about the Woman at the Well you might want to watch a short sketch which we were shown first, this can be found here
This was illustrated with the Calling of Peter and Andrew from Matthew 4:18-22
As we considered Joy we heard the stories of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10) and The Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) before the final talk drawing the 3 themes together.
Key thoughts from the day
There were several opportunities to discuss these ideas in groups, especially how each story and value relates to St Mary’s. At the end of the day our main thoughts were encapsulated in a ‘wordle’. The more times a word was mentioned the larger it is displayed on the wordle:
